Whether you're entertaining guests, recovering after a workout, or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon, this cooling watermelon drink delivers incredible flavor and hydration in every sip.

    Watermelon Cooler

Made with juicy watermelon, tender basil seeds (sabja seeds), cooling gond katira (tragacanth gum), coconut water, fresh mint, kala namak, and chaat masala, this easy summer cooler is not only delicious but also loaded with nutrients that help keep your body cool and hydrated.

Why You'll Love This Watermelon Cooler

    • Naturally sweet and refreshing
    • Rich in electrolytes from coconut water
    • Cooling ingredients perfect for summer
    • Easy to prepare in under 10 minutes
    • No refined sugar needed
    • Packed with antioxidants and hydration
    • Great for hot weather, outdoor parties, and post-workout recovery

    What is Gond Katira?

Gond Katira, also known as Tragacanth Gum, is a natural edible gum widely used in Indian summer beverages. Once soaked, it expands into a jelly-like texture that helps cool the body from within.

Traditionally, gond katira is consumed during the summer months to:

    • Prevent heat exhaustion
    • Support hydration
    • Promote digestive health
    • Provide natural cooling effects

Its mild flavor makes it perfect for drinks, falooda, sherbets, and summer coolers.

Benefits of Basil Seeds (Sabja Seeds)

Basil seeds are tiny black seeds that swell when soaked in water. They are commonly used in Indian drinks and desserts.

    Benefits include:

    • High in fiber
    • Supports digestion
    • Helps maintain hydration
    • Provides a cooling effect
    • Rich in antioxidants
    • May help promote fullness

Combined with watermelon and coconut water, basil seeds create a refreshing drink that's both satisfying and nourishing.

    Ingredients or the Watermelon Cooler

Juicy sweet watermelon - There are various different ways you can pick sweet juicy water melons. Here is a great article by Serious Eats that explains it in detail.

Gond Katira - Aso known as Tragacanth Gum, is a natural edible gum widely used in Indian summer beverages. It helps to cool your body and promotes digestive health.

Basil seeds - Can easily be confused with chia seeds. These are high in fiber, supports digestive system and provides a cooling effect.

Kala Namak - A pinch of salt helps to enhance the sweetness of the watermelon. You can either use the regular salt or use black salt (kala namak). Kala namak has a distinctive savory, sulfurous flavor. It adds Umami depth and a slightly smoky flavor.

Chaat Masala - Chaat masala is a tangy, savory Indian spice blend that instantly adds a burst of flavor to fruits, snacks, salads, and drinks.

Fresh Mint Leaves - Watermelon and mint leaves always works together beautifully. In both drinks and salad.

Coconut water - You can make this watermelon cooler with water too but during peak summer days I prefer coconut water.

    Steps to prepare

    Steps to prepare

STEP 1 - Soak Basil Seeds and Gond Katira

Add 1 tablespoon basil seeds to 1 cup water. Let soak for 15 to 20 minutes. The seeds will swell and develop a gelatinous coating.

Soak 1 teaspoon gond katira in 1 cup water overnight. By morning, it will expand significantly and become jelly-like or shaved ice.

    Steps to prepare

STEP 2 – Either blend the watermelon with a few fresh mint leaves or muddle them directly in a serving glass. For an ultra-smooth and refreshing drink, blend the watermelon first and strain the juice before adding the remaining ingredients.

STEP 3 – Add the soaked basil seeds and gond katira, followed by kala namak and chaat masala.

Kala namak (Indian black salt) and chaat masala are popular Indian seasonings that add a tangy, savory flavor to the cooler. If you don't have them on hand, simply use regular salt and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice instead.

STEP 4 – Fill the glass with ice cubes, then pour in coconut water for a naturally sweet and hydrating drink. You can also use regular chilled water if preferred.

STEP 5 – Stir everything well and give it a taste. Adjust the seasoning with a little more salt if needed, then serve immediately and enjoy this cooling summer refreshment.

Tips for the Best Watermelon Cooler

    • Use chilled watermelon for maximum refreshment.
    • Choose ripe, sweet watermelon to avoid adding sugar.
    • Adjust kala namak and chaat masala to taste.
    • Fresh coconut water delivers the best flavor.
    • Serve immediately for optimal freshness.
    • Keep basil seeds and gond katira soaked in advance for quick preparation.

    Variations

Add extra mint and a squeeze of lime for a mojito-inspired flavor.

Increase coconut water and add tender coconut flesh for a tropical twist.

Blend in a small piece of fresh ginger for a spicy kick.

Add cucumber and lime for an ultra-refreshing detox-style beverage.

Watermelon contains lycopene, vitamin C, and other antioxidants that help support overall wellness.

We went to Tahoe for the Fourth one year, when I was very small. I remember the fireworks being really nice. Did your family go see them?
And the drink sounds really refreshing, and the jalapeno is a very interesting ingredient!
