Creamy and luscious Mango Milkshake otherwise known as Mango Mastani is a popular summer drink from the city of Pune in India. I have always had mango lassi, and it was only in our last visit to India, which was in 2019 that I tasted this super delicious drink.

    Pune's famous Mango Mastani

If you are in Pune, then you must try the Pune's famous Mango Mastani! You prepare Mango Mastani with fresh mango and vanilla ice cream. It is flavored with cardamom, assorted nuts and then topped with another scoop of ice cream.

It is such a delicious, rich and luscious drink that you cannot stop at just one glass.

    Ingredients for Mango Mastani

It's a simple and quick Mango Drink that requires just 5 simple ingredients:

    • Mangoes
    • Vanilla Ice Cream - Here is a recipe link if you want to try homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
    • Assorted nuts (optional)
    • Whipped Cream
    • Cardamom

All you need to do is blend everything except whipped cream and then topped with whipped cream or another scoop of ice cream.

History behind the name of the Mango Drink

It is said that Mango Mastani is named after the Queen Mastani who was the wife of Peshwa Bajirao. Queen Mastani was Bajirao's second wife and this luscious drink was names after her beauty.

Also, mast in hindi is awsm, and I bet one sip of this Mango drink and your first reaction will be awsm. And if you speak hindi, you are bound to say "mast"

What variety mangoes to use for this Mango Milkshake?

Since you will be blending the mango with vanilla ice cream, you don't have to be very picky about the variety of mango.

If in India, I would use Alphonso mangoes and out here in US, I always buy the Mexican Ataulfo mango.

Another option is using store bought mango purée and if you are taking this route than definitely try Deep’s Kesar Mango Pulp. This brand is available on Amazon.

    Storing Mango Mastani

You can definitely store it in a glass jar in the refrigerator. But I would suggest make fresh batches everytime you want to enjoy a glass or two.

It hardly takes 5 minutes to prepare Mango Mastani and like any other milkshake, it tastes best when served fresh!
