Homemade bread is absolute happiness! While I love a good old white sandwich bread, occasionally I make this Flax and Oats Wheat Bread. It's healthy, and it is so easy to bake. The texture turns out soft and perfect for toast or sandwich.
Flax And Oats Wheat Bread
I have been waiting to share this post with you guys for two main reasons! First, I finally found my go-to bread recipe, Flax and Oats Wheat Bread. Second, I am sharing my first food video. Yay!
We are carb lovers. We try to cut down as much as possible but we cannot avoid it entirely.
So, to maintain a balance, we look for healthy options. Like trying to avoid white flour as much possible.
Few years back, we had bought a ginormous one and loved the idea of fresh bread every other morning. Just pour everything in the machine and let it do everything.
As easy and convenient as it sounds, the idea of looking for a space to store yet another kitchen gadget is a nightmare for me.
I decided to just bake breads more often and try to make it healthy.
So, in went flax, oats, whole wheat and a little bit of all-purpose flour too. If you have a stand mixer to prepare the dough and a little bit of patience, baking bread regularly without a bread machine is equally easy and convenient.
Since the entire activity of baking bread is effortless, I decided to try making a video.
Well, that was stressful, especially when you try to do it on your own using a tripod. I am not much of a tripod user.
I like to move around and have more control. For the past two years, Arvind and I tried making a few food videos but none came out good enough to share.
We had to cook, style and shoot while Avyan was napping. There was just not enough time!
Now that Avyan started school and I get the house to myself on weekdays, I decided to give it a go.
MORE BREAD RECIPES TO TRY
I am not absolutely happy with the video but I still like it enough to share with you guys.
Editing videos, especially fixing those exposure and contrast etc. is still a challenge. I am still learning.
So, if you have any advice, tips, tricks or useful links, please do share.

Flax And Oats Wheat Bread
Ingredients
- 2 cups wheat flour
- ¼ cup flax powder
- ½ cup rolled oats and some more to sprinkle on top
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 cup water
Instructions
- Pour water in a glass or a measuring cup and warm it just enough so that you could dip your finger. Stir yeast and sugar. Cover and let it sit for about 5 minutes or until the yeast activates. If the yeast doesn’t activate, dump the entire mixture and start over again.
- Once yeast is activated, add oats, flax and flour in a mixing bowl along with salt and oil. Give it a mix and make a well in the center. Pour the activated yeast into the well. Using a rubber spatula, give it a mix to form a rough dough. Now, if you are using a stand mixer, attach the dough hook and knead at speed 3 for 12 minutes. If you kneading by hand, scrape the dough in a lightly floured countertop or a wooden board and knead until it’s smooth and elastic. It should take about 12 minutes.
- Once the dough is ready, make a rough round ball and place it either in the same mixing bowl or a separate one that's lightly brushed with oil. Cover it with clear wrap/kitchen towel and keep it in a warm place. Give it a couple of hours to rise and double in size.
- Once the bread dough rises and doubles in size, scrape it carefully on to a board. Fold it from the sides and form a rectangular shape. Place it on the bread-baking pan and sprinkle some oats on top. Cover it with clear wrap/kitchen towel and keep it in a warm place for a second rise.
- Finally, pre-heat the oven to 375F and bake the bread for about 40 to 45 minutes.

We've been consciously cutting down on carbs too, so rarely eat any bread these days. But this one looks healthy enough to give it a try. Watching anything makes it so much easier to understand. So thanks for sharing your first video 🙂
